Privacy Policy

Modu ("we", "the app") is a Chinese reading app for learners. This policy explains what data we handle and why. We do not sell your data, do not use third-party ad or tracking SDKs, and do not track you across other apps or websites.

Data we handle

• Account: if you sign in (Sign in with Apple, or Google where available), we store your email/account identifier and a display name (nickname) you choose, to provide your account.
• Anonymous device ID: a random identifier generated on your device, used for rate-limiting our AI services and product analytics.
• Learning data: your saved words, known words, reading progress, statistics and saved texts. All of it is stored on your device. What leaves your device depends on whether you sign in:
  • Signed out: nothing is uploaded. Everything stays on the device.
  • Signed in (free): only your vocabulary list is synced to our cloud, so you don't lose the words you collected when you change phones.
  • Signed in with Plus: additionally your known words, reading statistics, reading progress and profile (nickname) are synced.
• Usage analytics: in-app events (e.g. opening the reader, looking up a word, finishing a review) to understand and improve the app. These record that an action happened, not its content — we do not collect or store the words you look up or save.
• Subscription: if you purchase Modu Plus, your subscription status and purchase history are processed to unlock paid features.

Where your data goes

• Supabase (hosted in Singapore): account, cloud sync of learning data, and analytics events.
• Our proxy (Cloudflare Workers): routes AI requests without exposing API keys in the app.
• DeepSeek: when you use AI explanations or generate content, the word and sentence you tap (or the topic/level you choose) are sent to DeepSeek to produce the result.
• Microsoft Azure (Text-to-Speech): when you use natural voice reading, the text you play is sent to Azure to synthesize audio.
• RevenueCat: processes your subscription status and purchase history (via Apple's in-app purchase), associated with your account.
• Apple / Google: used only to sign you in when you choose that option.

Sentence/paragraph translation runs on your device (offline) and is not sent anywhere.

Retention & deletion

Local data lives on your device until you delete it or uninstall. You can delete your account in Settings, which removes your cloud data. You can also export your data locally at any time.

Children

Modu is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
